It’s a little cold and grey out there today, but thought I would share my musings about the traditional Japanese aesthetic called Wabi Sabi; which comes from Buddhist teachings and is about the acceptance of transience and imperfection. Wabi Sabi values the imperfect and finds wisdom in natural simplicity; I think that's why it resonates with me so much!
I recently practised a hot yoga class after taking a couple of weeks off and found myself getting frustrated that I couldn't do as much as normal. It's hard not to become competitive, even with one's self and it’s easy to feel disappointed with your body and its ability. Whilst it is good to push yourself to the edge of your limit, it’s important not to worry where that limit is. So, recognise that this is your limit, in that moment, on that day; wherever this may be is where the therapeutic benefits of your practice lie.
Embrace the Wabi Sabi in you, accept your imperfections and remember: nothing lasts, nothing is finished and nothing is perfect.
Or in the words of the wonderful and wise Walter Sobchak... 'Nothing is f@cked here.' ?
